SITA Scoring Table Guidelines  - last updated 04/04

At each track meet, the scoring table is a central location.  It is there that equipment is kept, paperwork & ribbons are organized, and league officials gather.  During meets, 6 volunteers are needed at the scoring table.  3 will record scores ( 1 from each of the 3 competing schools who should arrive 1 hour ahead), 2 will be “runners” and 1 will handout ribbons to athletes. Each of the 3 competing schools sends 2 volunteers to the scoring table; one to sit and record scores, and one to manage ribbons or serve as a “runner”.

To manage ribbons:  A box of ribbons are kept at the scoring table.  These are already organized into neat packets for those athletes who place in each event.  The table can be a confusing place at times as athletes “swarm” for their ribbon and score.  The volunteer handling the ribbons helps to keep the process organized.  Chaos is avoided when Sprint ribbons take priority over Field event ribbons when given a choice.  There are extra ribbons in the box to accommodate ties and odd circumstances. If ever you are short ribbons, leave a note with the child’s name, school & place and a ribbon will be delivered by Marlene Hoak. Bottom line, send those little ones home happy…as long as recorded scores and places are fair.

Runners:  2 volunteers, called runners, will hold the Running events clipboards.  Each form allows room for the runner to document the school abbreviation, the place & the time  beside the athlete’s name (school name, not child’s name, is recorded for relays.)   The 2 runners will stand by the finish line for sprints, relays, the 800 and the Mile and document the results onto the forms as they are announced at the finish of each race.  Runner (#1) will gather the 4 athletes who place and lead them to the table.  He/she will read aloud the results to the scorers who are recording onto a Master score sheet (or accepting individual score sheet to be transcribed later as timing allows.)  Ribbons are handed out as this is done.  Meanwhile, Runner (#2) is attending the next race underway.

Scorers:   These 3 volunteers will manage one of 3 master sheet categories- track events, field events & an overall scorecard.    Arriving early, these volunteers can oversee the preparation of forms.  8 clipboards, each with individual event boy & girl score sheets, will be available.  Coaches are responsible to pencil in their school’s entries prior to the start of the race.  (If a child is sent over to the table later, his/her late entry is acceptable.)  Completed clipboards are ready for runners and for volunteers overseeing field events.  Scorers should attempt to transcribe event results to the Master sheets as they are announced, however, the table gets busy at times.  Keep the individual event result sheets and transfer information later.  It is more important that the children receive their ribbons then leave the area around the table quickly. Please record onto Master sheets with clear, dark writing so as to allow results to be posted legibly on SITA’s website.

Point system: First place receives 5 points, second place 3 points, third place 2 points and 4th place 1point for a total of 11 points.  As only 3 lanes compete in the 800 relay, the point allotment is 5-3-2.  In the case of ties, the overall point allotment must still equal 11.  If 2 schools tie for 1st, add the point allotment for 1st and 2nd place together (5+3) then split it so that each team receives 4 points.  Eliminate 2nd place altogether so that the 3rd athlete receives 2 points and the 4th, 1 point for a total of 11 points.  Always round UP to the nearest 10th of a second for relays, sprints and 1600
EXAMPLE: 2.21.45 FOR A 1600 WOULD BE 2.21.5
EXAMPLE: 47.03 FOR A SPRINT WOULD BE 47.1
EXAMPLE: 1.59.14 FOR A 300 RELAY WOULD BE 1.59.2

Each school’s paperwork at meet’s end must be given to a SITA representative, or to the Starter, or dropped off at Hoak’s Restaurant.

(IMPORTANT: There are  no ties for field events in the Championship Meet)

Field Event Volunteers:  Keep clipboard for the event they record.  Athletes who place will be lead to the table for documentation of times and ribbons.

Bubble Gum Races:  Usually 1 or 2 bubble gum relays will precede the meet.  These races allow younger athletes and those not qualifying to compete to be part of the meet and receive ribbons.  No score is allotted but order of finish is considered for ribbons.  The ribbons without a year printed on them are for these events.  Results should be recorded in the margin of the Relay Master Sheet.
